Win them over: 10 interview tips

Most people would agree, actually securing a job interview is the hardest part of job searching. Online recruitment provides greater exposure for recruiters, leading to more applications, and ultimately making it more difficult for individuals to get interviews. This means that when you get an interview, you need to win your future employees over. Read on to discover 8 steps to making a success out of your interview.

1. Presumably, your CV was of a high enough standard to get noticed in the first place. Now get familiar with the contents. Be sure that you are able to retain any information you included on work history and education. Do not be vague, for example, “Um, about 2 years.” is not a good reply, especially if your CV says 7 months!
2. Dress appropriately for the position you are applying for, even if the original advert for the job had a casual tone. First impressions last and tend to stay with the interviewer. Preparation is a vital component in acing an interview - clean, respectable and appropriate clothing is essential.
3. Always try to arrive early. Being late for your interview does not look good. Try to get to your interview 10 minutes early, as this will allow you time to settle your thoughts.
4. Try to prepare yourself for questioning, do some research into the most commonly asked questions at interviews, such as, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” Having answers memorised will make you feel more relaxed and confident.
5. Research the company. Read the company’s mission statement on their website, brochure or business card. Having a clear idea about the company’s motives and direction will help you style your answers appropriately.
6. Have some ready answers about your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest and open, as there is no point in telling your potential employer that your strengths lie in one area, when they clearly do not.
7. Remember that you are also interviewing them. What does the position have to offer you that you cannot find anywhere else? You are selling yourself, and they need to sell themselves to you in terms of pay, hours, position responsibilities, benefits and other relevant points.
8. Be yourself at the interview. Your interviewer would like to see what kind of person you are. Putting on a brave face for your interview is fine, but do not hide who you really are.

Throughout this article, one word is used repetitively: Preparation. Walk into your interview with the confidence of a well-prepared person. Make a success out of your interview, follow our simple guide and secure your dream job.
